The Japanese manufacturer is working on the next generation of its well-known SUV which will enter the market as the 2020 Subaru Outback. The new Outback will be upgraded on every front and it will be inspired by the Viziv Concept Tourer. However, it will keep its familiar proportions and lines. The interior will also be revised and this time we can expect a new engine option instead of the previous 6-cylinder unit.
Under the hood of 2020 Subaru Outback
The 2020 Subaru Outback will arrive with the same engine as before but it should also offer a new engine option instead of the previous 6-cylinder engine. So, the base engine is going to be a 2.5-liter flat-4 unit which will be able to make 175 horses and 174 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to a continuously variable transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual control. The all-wheel drive system will be standard as before. As for the fuel economy, it will get 25 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 28 combined.
On the other hand, the current model is also offered with a 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine which has the output of 256 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque. However, the 2020 model year is supposed to drop this unit and instead use a new one. And it will most likely be the same unit which powers the Ascent model. So, it is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. This engine is able to deliver 260 horses and 277 pound-feet of torque. It is also expected to work with a continuously variable transmission and the get the all-wheel drive system as standard. Unfortunately, we still don’t know the fuel economy of the new unit in the future 2020 Subaru Outback.
The external appearance of the 2020 Subaru Outback
In terms of exterior design, the 2020 Subaru Outback will also be revised but it will keep its well-known proportions and familiar lines. And it will retain its SUV shape combined with a wagon look. So, this time, the newest Outback will now borrow similar design cues from the Viziv Concept Tourer. And it will look bolder than before. The front end will keep its hexagonal grille but it will feature a more squared-off look. The previous C-shaped aggressive headlamps will retain its well-known shape but it will be a slightly more elongated than before. Furthermore, the fender vents might be slightly refreshed as well.
The profile of the new Outback will also be revised and will get bigger wheels and narrow side windows. And it will now look more muscular. We also expect the rear fascia to look a bit different taillights which should feature a sharper design. Speaking of the platform, nothing is yet sure, but some sources claim that the new Outback might ride on the new Subaru Global Platform for the first time.
The interior design of the 2020 Subaru Outback
The cabin of the 2020 Subaru Outback will also be revised, like the exterior, but we don’t expect any large changes. So, the center console will now look more modern and might get a larger digital display in the center so as the new digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel. Like before, it will come with two rows of seats and will be able to welcome up to five passengers. However, this time the cabin might be quieter than before. The cargo space will be excellent as always and with all seats up, it measures 35.5 cubic feet. And with the rear seats folded down, it expands to 73.3 cubic feet. Furthermore, all the seats will be comfortable, supportive and are upholstered in cloth in the base trim. However, the higher trim levels will offer leather upholstery.
The 2020 Subaru Outback will be offered in four trim levels. Those include a base, Premium, Limited, and Touring models. So, the base model will include cruise control, automatic headlights, a 6-way manual-adjust driver’s seat, Bluetooth, 17-inch wheels, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a 6.5-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, CD player, and so on. The Premium model will add 8.0-inch screen, dual-zone climate control, six speakers, fog lights, four USB ports, heated front seats, and 10-way power driver’s seat.
Furthermore, the Limited model will get 18-inch wheels, keyless ignition, Harman Kardon audio system, a power liftgate, and leather upholstery. The Touring model will also include LED headlights, navigation, a heated steering wheel, etc. Moreover, every model should now offer the Subaru Eyesight system as standard. And this system consists of several cameras which will identify other vehicles on the road, pedestrians and other.
