2020 Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander PHEV: Specs, Review, Design

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander PHEV is set to hit the market sometime next year, and we assume that it won’t be before the middle of the same year. This time, the new Outlander should be mildly refreshed both inside and out, while the engine options should remain the same. Furthermore, the equipment and features should also be upgraded.

The new 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander will be available with several types of engines including a plug-in hybrid unit. So, the base is a 2.4-liter inline-4 engine which is capable of making 166 horses and 162 pound-feet of torque. And this unit is found in the ES, SE, LE, and SEL models. The engine will be connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission and will be available with front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. The front-wheel drive model will get 25 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The AWD version will get 24/29 mpg in the city/highway.

The next unit is a 3.0-liter V-6 which is able to make 224 horses and 215 lb-ft of torque. It will work with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and will be available with all-wheel drive system only. This engine will have the towing capacity of 3,500 pounds while the 4-cylinder will be able to tow up to 1,500 pounds. As for the fuel economy, it is estimated to be 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

The Outlander PHEV model will use a plug-in hybrid engine which will combine a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and two electric motors. The gasoline engine will generate 117 hp and 137 lb-ft of torque. The PHEV engine will be mated to a continuously variable transmission and will come with all-wheel drive system. It will get 25 mpg combine and 74 MPGe. Moreover, it will have an all-electric range of 22 miles. With the DC Fast Charging, it needs 25 minutes to charge the battery to 80 percent.

As for the exterior design, the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander will get simple and clean but handsome design as the previous versions. The front end is angular and features some nice chrome trim. The profile is also nicely sculpted and sleek, and there are power-folding side mirrors and standard 18-inch wheels. Furthermore, the Outlander PHEV model will get the same styling except the badging and the additional fuel door found on the right side of the vehicle which includes the charge port. However, the 2020 model year could get some new details and maybe some new exterior colors and new wheels as well.

The interior design

All the versions of the 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander will come standard with three rows of seats and will be able to place up to seven passengers. However, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will get two rows of seats and will welcome five passengers. All the seats are very comfortable and supportive and the materials are quality. The whole design of the cabin is simple and clean and the interior is quiet. The second row is flipping and folding which makes the entrance to the third row easy. However, the third row is small and it is the best for children. All the controls are easy to use and there is a 7.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system in the center of the dashboard. The maximum cargo space in the standard three-row model is more than 63 cubic feet. And with all seats up, it measures 10.3 cubes.

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander will be available in several trim levels and those include ES, SE, SEL, and GT trims. The base model will include a 7.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, keyless ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, front and rear USB ports, a rearview camera, and 18-inch wheels. The SE trim will add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, fog lights, heated and power-operated front seats. The option package will include LED headlights, a heated steering wheel, and a 360-degree camera system. Furthermore, the SEL model will get leather seats, and more quality materials and the Touring package will include active safety features.

The GT model will offer a rear seat entertainment system and all-wheel drive system as standard. Some of the options will include the Rockford Fosgate audio system, a power tailgate, a heated steering wheel, a power sunroof, power-folding side mirrors and so on.

Release date and price

The 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander PHEV should arrive at the market next year, but the exact date is not yet known. The price should start at around $25,000 and the PHEV model will be around $35,500.
