The Jeep manufacturer is working on the next generation of its flagship SUV, the Grand Cherokee. The upcoming 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee will bring some important changes and perhaps the most noticeable will be the Level 2+ partially self-driving technology. Thanks to this new system, the Jeep will be able to steer, accelerate, and brake on the highway drive. Furthermore, it is also said that the new Cherokee will be underpinned by the new platform and should get a new plug-in hybrid powertrain.
2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee powertrain
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee will return with several types of engines. And there will be five engines to choose from. The one is a 3.6-liter V-6 engine which can develop 295 horses and 260 pound-feet of torque. It will come with a choice between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive systems. The RWD model gets 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The AWD variant is rated at 18/25 mpg in the city/highway drive.
The next is a 5.7-liter V-8 engine which is able to make 360 hp and the torque of 390 lb-ft. The all-wheel drive is standard and it gets 14/22 mpg in the city/highway drive. There is also a diesel 3.0-liter V-6 engine. This one has the output of 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.
Furthermore, the Grand Cherokee SRT will use a 6.4-liter V-8 powertrain. It is capable of producing 475 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The AWD is also standard, which is the same for all the V-8 engines. As for the fuel economy, it gets 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.
The last one is a 6.2-liter V-8 supercharged engine which powers the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk model. This unit makes 707 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque. It is the least fuel-efficient of all the units in the offer. It is estimated to be 11 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway. As well, all the engines will work with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
On the other hand, some sources claim that the upcoming 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee should also be available with a plug-in hybrid engine. However, there are still no any specific details about performance etc.
Design of exterior and new platform
The 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee will represent the next generation model and in that manner, it could bring some major changes. So, if the latest speculations are true, the new Grand Cherokee should ride on the new platform. And it will most likely be the same architecture which underpins the Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV and the Giulia sedan models.
Speaking of the external appearance, the new Grand Cherokee will mix the traditional muscular look with a modern and handsome design. It is offered in several trim levels. The SRT model sits a bit lower than the base model and the Trackhawk sits even lower. The Trackhawk version differs from the standard model with the 18-inch off-road wheels, quad tailpipes, and prominent red tow hooks.
