Ford manufacturer is currently testing its all-new 2020 Ford Escape which should first debut early next year. The newest Escape will represent the next generation model and it will be fully refreshed. First of all, it will ride on the new platform shared with the Ford Focus which with it will also get some similar styling tweaks. In the terms of design, it will be slightly larger than its predecessor and will get a new front fascia. Inside the cabin, it will offer more space and new design of the dashboard and infotainment screen. On the engine front, alongside the standard engines, it is very likely to get a new plug-in hybrid as well.
2020 Ford Escape engines and performances
The all-new 2020 Ford Escape will be offered with several types of engines which are found in the current model, but it will also feature some new options. So, to start with a familiar 2.5-liter inline-4 engine which is able to develop 168 hp and 170 pound-feet of torque. This unit works with a 6-speed automatic transmission and comes with front-wheel drive system. It is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
The next is a 1.5-liter inline-4 turbocharged engine. This one has the output of 179 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. It is available with both front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations. However, this time it might get the new 9-speed automatic gearbox. With FWD this unit gets 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The AWD model is rated at 22/28 mpg.
There is also a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 powertrain. This one is able to generate 245 hp and the torque of 275 lb-ft. It should also be linked to a new nine-speed automatic transmission. As for the fuel economy, the front-wheel drive model is estimated to be 21/28 mpg in the city/highway. Connected to all wheels, it gets 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
On the other hand, some sources say that the new Escape might also get a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine. However, it is not yet confirmed. As well, it is very likely that we will finally see a plug-in hybrid engine under its hood, but for now, there is no any precise information about performance.
The new platform and exterior design
The 2020 Ford Focus will now ride on the new platform designed for compact vehicle and it is the same architecture which underpins the newest Ford Focus. It is a front-wheel drive platform but the all-wheel drive system will also be available. As well, because of the new architecture, the upcoming Focus will now be longer and wider compared to the previous generation model.
Design-wise, despite the new platform, the 2020 Ford Escape will keep its familiar design and shape but it will get some new elements and the rear end appears to be larger than before. So, this will improve space inside the cabin, especially for the rear passengers. Furthermore, it is very likely that the Escape will borrow some similar design cues from the Focus with which it shares the platform as well. The front fascia will be redesigned with new grille and headlamps. The rear end will also be inspired by the Focus and will get a sharper design of the taillights, dual exhaust pipes, and linger rear hatch.
Design of interior of the 2020 Ford Escape
Based on the spy photos, the interior of the 2020 Ford Escape should also be inspired by the Ford Focus’ cabin. The dashboard will be positioned a bit lower and will get a new infotainment touchscreen with tablet-like design and the controls and air vents will be placed below. As we have already mentioned earlier, the interior of the new Escape will now feature more space, especially for the rear seat occupants. Moreover, we expect it to offer more cargo room also.
Equipment of the 2020 Ford Escape
The 2020 Ford Escape should be available in S, SE, SEL, and Titanium trim levels. The base S will come standard with power features, cloth upholstery, cruise control, 17-inch wheels, AM/FM/CD audio with 6 speakers, Bluetooth, an upgraded touchscreen for infotainment and so on. The SE model will add satellite radio, keyless ignition, an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Sync 3 infotainment, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a power driver seat, heated front seats, and dual-zone climate control.
Furthermore, the SEL will also get rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, and a power tailgate. The Titanium model will also include 18-inch wheels, navigation, a power passenger seat, HD radio, Sony audio system with 12 speakers, ambient lighting and blind-spot monitors.
Release date and price
According to the latest news, the all-new 2020 Ford Escape might be presented later this year or perhaps at the beginning of 2019 at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. The price is not yet known, but it could get slightly higher than the current model which begins at $24,000.
